Trinet Network

General

Trinet, the Otaniemi area campus network, was founded in 1986. Today it provides Internet access to all TKY student appartments and HOAS student appartments located in Otaniemi. The network covers about 2500 student households and is connected to Funet, the Finnish research and educational network. This allows the use of academic network services in addition to a fast and reliable general Internet connectivity.

All apartments are connected to a 100 Mbps switched network with 1 Gbps access switch links to the 10 Gbps backbone. Trinet has redundant connections to Funet with 10 Gbps main (Funet/Espoo) and backup (Funet/Helsinki) links.

Along with the wired service, the TKY wireless network is available in sauna, party and meeting facilities (current coverage). It provides secure encrypted access via eduroam authentication or unencrypted access via the TKY open access network.

The network provides both IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity. IPv4 multicasting is supported throughout the network. Multicasting is used for TKY and Maxinetti IPTV services. Users may also receive multicast streams from the Internet. IPv6 multicasting is currently available in a very limited fashion due to limited support in the switches currently used.

Cable TV and IPTV

Since the fall 2001 Trinet also administers the cable TV network. Digital TV channels can be received both via the digital cable TV network and using IPTV via the Trinet network.

To be able to watch TV you need a DVB-C (cable) or DVB-T (terrestrial) digibox. Of these two options the DVB-C (cable) version is preferable. Further alternatives are TKY IPTV, Maxinetti IPTV or renting a Maxinetti IP digibox.

Important

Read carefully the instructions on how to configure your network settings so you will not cause problems to other users of the Trinet network.

The Trinet administration uses the newsgroup tky.trinet.info for announcements. The tky.trinet newsgroup is for general discussion and help.
